Our Kelpie

The kelpie is a uniquely Australian breed of working dog which has its origins in our very own electorate of Wannon. The kelpie was developed to muster sheep in the rugged areas along the Glenelg River near Casterton.

Kelpies are famously hard working, but they are also intelligent, reliable and energetic – just like Alex and the volunteers of Wannon’s community independent movement!

Here's a short video about the campaign kelpie!

Our kelpie signs have been so popular that we have not been able to keep up with orders! Each one has been hand made from old corflute signs, and painted (sometimes up to four layers of paint!) our beautiful orange colour. We may in the near future have some for sale in our hubs, but that depends on fulfilling back orders first.

If you would like to have a go at making your very own kelpie, you can download the template here. The paint colour we have been using is Amber Flame from Haymes, although any similar orange will be fine. We have found it best to do a few layers of grey undercoat first to ensure any text on the old sign is fully covered.

Come to one of our community hubs and you may be lucky enough to be able to purchase one of our fantastic kelpie jewellery badges.

These delightful badges have been individually hand made by a local volunteer from reclaimed materials.

An orange kelpie sign, badge or poster can be used to promote our community independent campaign in a subtle way, where an overtly political sign may not be appropriate. It can be a great conversation starter, allowing you to talk about the importance of our community movement if asked “What’s with the orange dog?”.
